Cinder, originally uploaded by margotwood. View in a larger size here.

This is the latest addition to my series of photographs inspired by young adult novels.

This one was inspired by the book CINDER by Marissa Meyer - a retelling of Cinderella, set in the future and Cinderella is a mechanic cyborg.

Oh Cinder. Oh how I struggled for MONTHS to figure out what I was going to do with this photo.

Originally I was going to set up shop in Chinatown, NYC and recreate the market scenes with Prince Kai but then I realized how extremely complicated THAT would be. So I decided to instead of doing a literal interpretation of a scene in the book, this is just more of a look at the character of Cinder and her every day life.

A few quick facts about this photo you may not know or possibly didn't see upon first inspection:

1. Iko - That glowing orb in the bottom right corner? Yes, that is my interpretation of Iko....well half of Iko. You see, that is actually a trash can that was conveniently photobombing this shot so I decided to just go with it and turn it into Iko.

2. Cyborg hand - No, that is not a glove. If you look at it closely you might begin to notice that it actually IS my hand, just with some photoshop trickery.

3. Asian influences - A friend of mine pointed out that the toolboxes in the original photo had some English on them and since this book is set in "New Beijing" it would be a good opportunity to subtly work in some Asian influences. So I did some Googling and put in some Japanese words / phrases. $10 if you can translate it.

If you haven't read Cinder, go pick it up because it is a wonderfully written fantasy / steampunk / sci-fi / dystopian and one of my favorite books of this year.

Did you read Cinder? I would love your feedback on this fauxto! Don't be shy, leave a comment...

  1. Great idea! Love the creativity for the fauxto! :D And Cinder was such a good book :)

  2. We think this is a lovely tribute to a very original and fun book! Your take is not what we would have expected -- which is excellent! 'Cause like, who wants everything to be what they expect? ;P

It would be super cool if you continued the series when the other books come out (SCARLET, CRESS, and WINTER)...

  3. I was really surprised at how much I liked Cinder. Your cyborg hand looks great!

  4. I'm in love with everything about this. Especially the Cyborg hand. And Iko. and the text. But especially the cyborg hand.

  5. I spy the character "love" on the side of the counter, but can't see the other labels. :P

    Awesome pic!

  6. The market scene would have been seriously cool, but trying to manage all the people around would be nigh impossible. Love your cyborg hand!

This totally works for the book. Nice work!

  7. I need to tell Marissa you did this. She loves seeing stuff like this!! It looks fabulous! You did a great job!

  8. How amazing is this photo? I think it fits exactly what I have in mind when I picture Cinder.

  9. Japanese Kanji for 'love'... I have it on my bedroom wall. Love the photo :)
