My Favorite Photo of 2010

Lonely Diner, originally uploaded by margotwood.

Of all the photos I took in 2010, this is the one I am most proud of. Why? Well, for several reasons. First, as an amateur photographer who is constantly trying new things and trying to learn, this photograph is a complete side step from my normal style and represents that type of photograph I hope to become better at taking in 2011.

Candid people photos, or "street photography" (I guess?) has always been my weakness as a photographer. For some reason I shoot inanimate objects and graffiti better than I do people. Sure, I'm okay at posed portraits and whatever, but candid shots are just not my thing.

This photo, to me, is perfect. The editing, cropping, composition and subject matter all work so well together that I was almost angry when I realized what I had. I got angry because I knew it would take a lot of time and effort to capture a photo of this caliber again. Thus I come to my 2011 resolution: Get better at people photography and take more pictures.

2010 was a bit of a crazy year for me outside of photography. New job, new living situation, new city, new friends. There was a lot in 2010 that was keeping me from really focusing on my art. Now that I am more confident in my job, friends and relationships 2011 will be a year devoted to my art and I can't wait to see what the future holds!

  1. I love the photo, and I love your resolution. Go you!

  2. I adore portraits that give the illusion of not intruding, of looking in without disturbing the subject. A great shot.
